Ice Cream Lions?

Published by Fuad Ahmad

This print/poster campaign for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, produced by Ogilvy & Mather/Singapore, has been doing quite well at this year’s  shows. The campaign picked up 3 Bronze Print Clios, as well as a Gold in the Poster category at the One Show.  The art direction and writing are lovely, but are they Lion worthy?  It’s hard to argue with the line: Peace Love & Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's "Hugs"

Ben&Jerry's "Whale Cow"

Ben&Jerry's "Purple Caterpillar"

There’s been outstanding work done for ice cream in recent years, including last year’s Lion-winning campaign for Haagen-Dazs, produced by Goodby & Silverstein. Their “HD Loves Honey Bees” site garnered Goodby a Silver in the Titanium & Integrated category. You really have to explore the website to grasp the full scope of the work, but here’s a little taste of that Lion-winning campaign from 2009, a video Goodby produced to dramatize the frightening fact that honey bees are dying out, putting ice cream and the entire food chain at risk.

Here’s the story of the video: each time a honey bee discovers nectar, they return to the hive to spread the good news, doing a little dance of joy for their mates to share the news of an abundant source of life and energy…  not unlike what happens when Creative Directors return back to the agency after 5 days at Cannes….

(Plus, we just love any excuse to link to breakdancing men in bee costumes).
